The Legal Standpoint

There are many legal consequences that underage drinkers must face in addition to the physical, academic, social, and psychological ones.

Gabe Foster, a sophomore at Michigan State University, can confirm this from personal experience. He said he received a Minor in Possession ticket during his freshman year of college after being caught wandering around drunk in a residence hall.

A MIP is a citation given to underage drinkers that may require them to pay a fine of up to $100, do a number of community service hours decided upon by the judge assigned to the case, complete a substance abuse treatment program, suspension of driving privileges, or even a sentencing of up to 93 days in jail.

What consequence the offender will face is up to the judge to decide based on the number of times that person has broken drinking laws prior to the current offense.

Not only did Foster get a MIP ticket, but he was detained in the drunk tank for nine hours.

Whether or not an offender is thrown in the drunk tank to sober up depends on how drunk he or she is at the time of arrest and his or her behavior while being arrested or questioned.

The person who committed the crime may not be the only one suffering the consequences, however. His or her wallet could be in trouble as well.

When a person is sentenced to completing a substance abuse course, he or she is required to pay for that out of his or her pocket.

Having to complete community service hours can have an effect on the social life of the underage drinker, too. What time will they have to do fun things with friends if he or she is a student, has a job and has to complete community service hours?
